Tip Two Communication is SO important. TREAT yourself to a better approach. (From In a Blink by Dr. Michael Woods)
The TREAT approach offers a road map for determining the culturally appropriate manner in which to establish effective communication with sensitivity to the needs of your patient, particularly those in stress.
Touch- Physical touch can have a calming and connecting effect on your patient. For example, place your hand on the patient's hand while discussing a diagnosis or treatment to enhance the effectiveness of your communication and increase the likelihood that your patient will comply with your recommendations.
Respect - Respect your patients and show respect for their cultural beliefs about treatment and provider-patient interactions. For example, some cultures defer communication to the head of the family, so begin your communications there. Only through mutual respect can the provider-patient relationship work and an effective treatment be enacted.
Empathy - Communicate empathy through the tone of your voice and your nonverbal actions. Offer a healthy dose of compassion and a genuine attempt at understanding when setting a treatment plan with the patient's cooperation. Ask about and consider the patient's feelings about the diagnosis.
Attention - Pay attention, make appropriate eye contact and listen intently to ensure understanding and to build a productive, respectful provider-patient relationship.
Trust - Trust is gained over time through authentic relationship behaviors. Spend time with your patients and relate to them on a personal level. Find a commonality. Respect them. Empathize with them. Build an authentic provider-patient relationship that will ensure effective communications. |
