Would you like to communicate more effectively with patients?
 
Effective patient-centered communication involves effort and patience in following these distinct (yet almost simultaneous) steps:  
 
The 3 A's of effective patient-centered communication (from In a Blink by Dr. Michael Woods).

Awareness of the six communication variables that influence the dynamics of communication are critical to establishing effectiveness:
  • Culture/ethnic background
  • Gender bias
  • Personality/behavior traits
  • Time/urgency factors
  • Literacy level
  • Socioeconomic status
Assessment of how the communication variables influence the individual in front of you and your provider-patient relationship. Begin with learned generalities, then use specific questioning to fine-tune your communication strategy for true effectiveness.

Adapting your communication style to the specific needs of your patient will increase the likelihood of their understanding. Adapt to your patient's needs based on your awareness-driven assessment within each specific situation.
