Subject:
LMS Content Integration with
SCORM
SCORM is a set of standards created by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) to
help with the deployment of electronic learning technologies. For
developers of online courseware, SCORM is the definitive standard for
communication between your courseware and the hosting Learning Management System
(LMS). SCORM is the "holy grail" for our industry.
While SCORM is an excellent and necessary standard, it is not sufficient; it
does not guarantee error-free interaction between an LMS and e-learning
courseware. LMS content integration remains a challenging technical task.
The good news is that with the right tools and an understanding of the normal
interaction between courseware and the LMS, most integration issues can be
overcome.
- API detection schemes in the courseware and LMS may "trick" each other
into choosing the wrong version of the standard and result in errors.
- Miniscule errors in the storage and retrieval of bookmark data can cause
errors that will lock up the courseware.
- Aggressive use of the SCORM application interface can dramatically slow
down the execution of courseware.
- Synchronization issues during SCORM interactions between the courseware
and LMS can cause the courseware to stall or lock up.
- Differences in the format of data elements such as Mastery Score and Raw
Score can cause unexpected results.
Recommendations:
- Thoroughly test the compatibility of courseware and the target LMS
before you make a purchase.
- Ask for and understand the data requirements and expectation of the LMS
and courseware relative to scoring, training completion and other
"interactions".
- Challenge claims of SCORM Conformance in favor of demonstrated
interoperability.
- Look for a willingness to modify and adapt a SCORM implementation on the
part of your courseware and LMS provider.
If you are having trouble running PerforMax3content in your LMS or
issues with your content running in the MaxTrax LMS, please don't hesitate to
